Man Seeking Woman, the new FXX comedy from the Canadian native, tackles it all. A dark comedy featuring off-kilter humor, the pilot episode, airing Wednesday night, follows Josh Greenberg (Baruchel), a typical nice guy who has just been dumped by his long-time girlfriend. When he is suddenly forced to reenter the dating world equipped only with the advice of his best friend Mike (Eric Andre), viewers see how typical dating clichés unfold through his eyes. From dating an actual, literal troll to learning that his ex-girlfriend is now dating a 126-year-old Hitler, Josh’s journey is strange at best and absurd throughout, which is exactly where the comedy comes from. Imagine taking all of the worst-case scenarios from dating (your sister sets you up with a girl who looks like a troll, your ex that you’re still hung up on dating the worst person on the planet), and seeing them through the eyes of a guy who seems to be on a non-stop shroom trip. That’s the best way to describe this half hour journey. As the straight man dealing with the craziness around him, Baruchel is the perfect choice. A nice guy who just needs a win, Josh is someone audiences can sympathize with as he attempts to get over his former girlfriend and put himself in the dating world. When things are good, they’re really good: think phone calls from POTUS and a red carpet standing ovation. But when they’re bad, things get a little… extreme. If anyone can explain what it’s like to have a little rain cloud follow you around everywhere you went, Josh would be it. The cast is rounded out by solid performers too. Andre is stereotypical at times as the best friend just wanting his buddy to be laid, but even he is given a more complex, funny twist when Josh suddenly decides to come to his ex’s party. Saturday Night Live’s Vanessa Bayer is a fun surprise in the pilot as a girl Josh tries to pick up, the duo’s awkward scenes towards the end of the episode are some of the best. It could be a tough momentum to maintain, but by stripping down dating to its bare essentials and then going for the extremes, Man Seeking Woman delivers a funny half hour of comedy unlike anything else currently on television, and should fit in nicely with the alternative FXX crowd. Verdict. A fun, alternative comedy that showcases how absurd dating can be, Baruchel is extremely watchable—and likeable—as he’s surrounded by a supporting cast that often acts crazier than he does. You can’t help but root for him as you wonder what the hell is going to happen next. Man Seeking Woman debuts Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 10:30 p.m.
